Watery Earth Lesson 5 - Learning About Groundwater

Where did all the water that you poured into your cup go?
How does this model simulate what really happens to groundwater in the world? (How does water get underground? Where is water stored underground?)
Based on this experiment, what can happen to a drop of water after it falls on the ground?
Do you think humans use groundwater? If so, what do we use groundwater for?
How do humans get groundwater to the surface? Is this easy to do?
Do you think groundwater can move anywhere else? Where? How does it move?
How have your ideas about what happens to a drop of water changed since you started learning more about groundwater?

1.Well at first it went no where it stayed in the sand and in the coffee funnel. But when we poured the rest of the water in the sand it could not hold it at all and it poured into the gravel.

2. The water has to go through many surfaces before it can even get to the bedrock. Even though there weren't as many stages, there were still 3 and I think that it still showed how it works.

3. It will probably soak into water it has hit. If it doesn't, then it will evaporate into the air and then go threw the processes again.

4. I think that we do use water from underground, but it go threw a processes to make it cleaned first. We probably use it to drink, because of wells, and some people can dig water out of the ground, clean it, then put it in sinks for tap water.

5. They can use a well, or dig it up from the ground. But it is hard. It isn't too hard for a well, but there aren't very many wells, so usually you have to dig it up, and that is very hard.

6. I think that ground water can move because it can travel with the dirt.
7. I now know that water has many surfaces it has to go through then just the dirt. I also know that it soaks into many of those surfaces.

Lesson 6 - Pioneer Pastime

I enjoyed the the three days in Alcove spring. I was very relaxed. I had a lot of fun swimming and playing games like bean bag double can.I did not like doing all the chores they were getting in the way of the fun time. The chores I had was cleaning clothes and making dinner. These are the chores that I do on the trail and on my breaks. We hardly ever get to clean are cloths There were many things to do like prisoners base and Simon says. I wish that we can stay there forever. Anyways why do we have to go to Oregon. I love it here. Why can we stay we just will eat leftovers the rest of the way. Anyways we go fresh berries and a real meal.I enjoyed the berries and the vegetables in the stew. What I did not like was the rabbit stew that was not my favorite but I ate it to stay healthy. My favorite part was the apple cobbler for deserts. Yum that was the best thing that we will probably have on the Oregon trail. We had to rest the animals why we were on the stop and they were very happy now that they got to rest. I guess that I have it better than the oxen pulling our wagons. They have had to walk all the way like slaves, with hundreds of pounds they have to carry with people whipping by them making them keep going. I bet if they would have had to walk another 15 miles without rest, they would probably have collapsed. This stop was on that I won't forget the it was fun.

Question 1. Do people really struggle to find clean drinking water?

Perdictions
What percentage of water is salt water and which is fresh?

What percentage is earth is air,ground, surface, ice?

A lot of people struggle from not either being close to water, in a dry land, 783 million people do not have access to water, and they usually died from that. People really do struggle to find water or they do not know where it is at.

I think that 80% is salt water and that 20% is fresh water because there is a lot of the earths water is salt.

The percentage of earth split into 4 different types. my prediction is that the percentage of ice is 35% and the the percentage of air is 25. The percent of ground is 20% and the surface water is the rest.

Earths water is 97.24% salt water. That means that we can only drink 3% of earths water.
.001 of our the fresh water on the earth in the air! That is not a lot.
The surface water ( lake, river, stream, puddles,etc.)is .01 of the water on the earth. Everyone would think that the great lakes are huge!
All the water that in the ground is only .61 of the water on earth. Is that weird there is more surface water then the grounds water1 Even though there is more surface water.
All of the water that is ice is 2.14% out of all of them, I would think that the would be much more.

Reflections

I was so surprised that there was so much salt water because there are so many lakes and rivers everywhere like all the great lakes. I also was so surprised that there was 97.24 percent of earths water being salt and that there was 2.761 percent of earths water being fresh. I was also surprised that there was so little air water because of how much it rains and the percentage is only .001. I really need to stop wasting all that water in a day and save some.

Lesson 5-Crossing The Kansas River

Yellowstone did not come till 20 year after 1849 like 1871.
Trappers started coming to trap wool and they wanted beavers for there fur.
Beavers became scarce.
They wanted the beavers skin because it is fashionable. Lots of money because of the fashion style.
There would be 6- 8 feet of snow in the winter and it would be -30 at night.
It gets warmer in summer and the degrees it is 70-90.
There were native Americans.
In the winter, when they have work they will try to get out.
Yellowstone is very far away from stores. it is about 1 away.
They have a bunch of ascendant and the native Americans made Bowen arrows. This is glass.
Petrified wood is something they have in Yellowstone park, because of the volcano. The lava ended up coming to trees, and turning into ash.But, stone replaced the wood.that is why it is called petrified wood. It replaced something else.
This is one of the most common geyser it is called Old faithful geysers. We probably need to be careful.
Yellowstone is a huge volcano definitely need to be careful.But there is magma is good. Geysers have pressure under it pushes water up in the area. The opening of a geyser is about the the size of your fist.
A hot spring warms up becomes of the magma and the concrete it's is. you could get a chemical burn and they could boll you.
Mud pots are from the rain and the snow plow and then the mud pot gets gas out of it and it is a beautiful color. The nose of a mud pot is like putting your lips together and then.

So what happen is that we learned about Yellowstone's and what is in it. One of the most common geyser is Old Faithful. We should probably be careful on the trip. In winter when they have a chance they try to get out. It get very cold in winter because the tempter is -30 or below at night and a little warmer during the day. In summer it gets about 70- 90 degrees which is a big difference.There are mud pots and they disintegrate because of the gas that gets out. I am so glad that we got to talk to a park ranger because she gave us a lot of information.

Lesson 3 - What pioneers took with them on the Oregon Trail

I learned so much from this lesson about what the people on the Oregon Trail took with them. I took a guitar, and then we bought the rest of the supplies that we will need with us on the Oregon Trail. We all wanted to use a Prairie Schooner as our wagon for traveling and storage, and I think that this decision will help us through the journey. It really surprised me that we got oxen to pull us though. I thought that we would get mules to pull our wagon because they can go longer that oxen in one day. But I guess now that I think about it I realize that the mules are very hard to control and tame, while oxen are much easier to do so. We also brought extra things for the wagon just in-case a part of the wagon broke. We took extra king-bolts and axles, and hopefully we have enough to last us until the first fort that we travel by.

Wolves and Coyotes are found along the oregon trail and yellowstone.
There are 17 different kinds of rivers .
There are 20 peaks.
There is a canyons 20 miles long.
There there are more than 3,000 bisons in yellowstone.
Rhode Island and delaware could fit into yellowstone with room left over.
Yellowstone is is like a huge volcano.
700 oxen- 800 loose cows could fit into one wagon, with room.
Buffalo chips is a game.
Mountain Lions, wolves, Grizzlies, bisons.
Yellowstone is 31 thousand square miles.
A male bison weight about 2000 pound or a ton.
Coyotes live around for about 6 years.
You can tell it is a coyotes because of its big ears.
You can tell it is a wolf because of their small ears.
Wolves have very small muzzle compared to the rest of its body.
Coyotes lay down at night and weeping so that they can eat you or food around you.
There were no roads it was open prairie. It was grass and they rode over grass. People refer the oregon trail was as ocean with the flowing grass.
A lot of people were moving west because of the gold rush and the amazing land.
Coyotes front teeth are insiders to get all the meat of the kind of food they had.
A giant tooth in the coyotes mouth is called a canine tooth.
The tooth the the back of the mouth for a coyotes is called a molar. But there molars are not flat they are raised.
A coyote could eat 80 quarters pound hamburgers in 10 minutes.That is 20 pounds in only 10 minutes. They do that because there are other animals that are larger then them and they what to claim the food for himself. They eat al of there food in one time. they get to eat 4 to 5 times a week.
There could be 4 - 24 wolfs in one pack.
Both a wolf and coyote are both interested the same kind of animals.
A coyote has different coats for different kinds of weather.
Wolfs live in a very social bunch.
You will leave some of your friends ,family members, and anyone who wanted to come along.
You have to pull bug out of the flour because they attract.
Most people died because of unsanitary condition.
Down the trail you will see many grave marks.
There is one line and there is yellow grass.
In the summer the grass is not green, it is brown.
They us buffalo chips instead of wood as fuel.
There are more than on tract unless on sandstone or limestone and then they go in a line.
Some time it was long to get across when there I a spot where you have to what for days.
In the middle of the prairie there are snakes and bugs. Mostly,Rattle snakes.
In the prairie ,there are mascots the size of humming birds. there is not bug spray.
It can be hard to bring the wagon down hill. They hand to unhook the animal crates, or the animals to move attached to the wagon to move the wagon faster down the hill. ,but many small animals ride next to the wagon, and each wagon is responsible for there own animals.
they ate as much of the animal as they could.
Some people were assigned to lead the group on horse.
Food could last for 5-6 mouthes.
They would use buffalo fat as bug repellant.
Many people fear the black bear more.The black bear will attach to kill, where as grizzly bears would only bite as claws.
People were annoyed by biting flies on the Oregon trail.
Baggers life by themselves.
Baggers have white stripes from there noes to there shoulders.
Baggers weight6-12 lb. But in the winter he stuff themselves to weigh 20 lb.
You skin the bagger ,then put it over the fire.
The meat on a bagger taste more like game animals then you session it very good.You can also make into a soup.
Guard hair on a coyotes the first layer.
Then you have a soft coat that is like a down coat.
There are two different kinds of wolfs. They are meant for different reasons.
The wolf have webbing on their fur so when they are on the snow there feet don't sink in.
Rabies,
If the gray wolf standed up with its paws on mr solarz shoulders and with mr solarz hands in the air where mr solarz hands are that s where the wolf's nose is.
Honey Badgers are all over the oregon trail.
You would not see mountain lions or wolverines.
Lichen grows very slow.
Reindeer and Caribou eat lichen.
Lichen is an ecosystem.
Lichen is in perfume, medicine, and dies that have been there for thousands of years ago.
A eagle could kill a deer that is really unbelievable.
It was hard to go on the oregon trail.

I thought that the cool thing about this information was that the eagle could attach a reindeer. It is so cool because the eagle is smaller than the reindeer by a lot. The good thing is that there is a big environment but they could kill you very easily. There are bad rabies that could kill you because they will make you very sick. There are big mitosis the size of humming birds. There are also biting flies that would bight you. You use Buffalo fat as repellent weird. The Oregon trail is a hard mission. You would have to pull bugs out of your flour. The pioneers ate as much of the animals because they killed it and they are not waste full. A bunch of people of people died along the way and the put a stone in there memories. They usually died because of unsanitary reasons. You would hardly ever see mountain lions or wolverines along the way. There is a canyon 20 miles long that's big but there is also a canyon 277 miles long it is the great canyon that a big different. This information will help us on the Oregon trail along the way to stay alive. You might get assigned by the leaders to watch the animals and make sure they don't get eaten or run away. You could tell what animal by the way they like the wolves has small ears and the coyote has big ears.

Wagon suggestions.

Larger wagons need stranger animals to pull the weight
Get smaller wagons.
Multiply wagons would be a smart choice. If you could afford it.
The bigger Wagons if it rains will get stuck in the mud.
You walk unless you are sick or a baby.

Science Fair Presentation - First Draft

I'm glad I recorded my presentation on video before the Science Fair because:

It was easier on the day of the presentation after is did the first video.
It gave me a little help on how to fix it for the real science fair.
It helped me will what to say in the fair.
To now how to practice with some one before the real thing.'
It make it feel a little more comfortable with the real thing.

Science Fair Presentation - Improved Version

By the end of the Science Fair, my presentation was much better because:

It had more information in a shorter time.
It was intelligent.
I knew what I was doing.
I new how to do it.
I knew how to lure people in to my project.
I wanted to do it by the end and it was more enjoyable.
I was learning things as the kids or adults asked me questions.
I had said my speak over and over again.

Overall, I think that the Science Fair was a valuable experience because
I learned more about the topic.
I learned the best way to say it.
Made it more educational.
Had a fun time with what I was doing.
I definitely made some mistakes along the way, but I learned from them. Here are some examples
I said that my banana molded the fastest and it was actually the strawberry.
I said that the orange molded one time.
I said that the strawberry molded after 40 days but it was a shorter time because my grape molded in about a month.
If I were give the chance to do anything differently, I would
Practice what I was going to say.
Make it a little louder because sometimes I was quite.
Try to make it funner to listen to.
To get a better hook.
To Make the people wonder the answer.

The reason why we wanted to move west is because we want the rich soil and make a grand bounty of money and food. We wanted to move around and not be tied down like the Mountain Men. We also want to west because we want to find cheap land while other settlers make money in log businesses. To seek new life where it is not crowded. To have mild weather. Others around us are heading west because they want gold in California and others are also going for the good and rich soil just like us. Well when we heard about the amazing rich soil and how there is gold. But what makes me a little sad about going is that I have to leave all my friends and family. I hope that this place is worth it because I am going to go. The only thing that I am worried about is that they are tricking us. There are many free areas as I heard and there is great rich and good soil. But then there is California with is gold rush and thats big. The most exciting thing that is bringing me is the soil and how it is very warm and good areas so so that I can plant.
