Which joint did you choose as our most important joint?
Why did you choose that joint?
What things would be difficult to do without that joint?
What movement can be done without the use of joints? (Example: blinking your eyes)
The joint that I thought was most important was the jaw joint. It is known as the temporomandibular joint. I chose this joint because it allows movement of the mouth. The bones that make up this joint also hold the teeth. The teeth let us chew up the food that will give our body energy. This joint also controls the opening and closing of our mouth to allow us to swallow liquids. If we were not able to close our mouth the water would drain out and our bodies would become dehydrated. Eventually without being able to eat and drink we would dehydrate and die.
The movement of the tongue is not controlled by a joint. It is a voluntary muscle that is controlled by wanting it to. It serves a purpose with swallowing to push the food towards the back of our throat to go down into the digestive system.
