I think leaves change color for the tree's protection. When we get closer to fall the earth gets fewer hours of sunlight so, trees start to stop making food. Then the chlorophyll process slows down, and eventually stops all together. Lastly as the chlorophyll fades away wich makes the orange and yellow color more visable.
