In class today, we read a book called: If the World were A Village. This book was about what everything is like if the world were put into a village of 100 people. I had a lot fun reading this book, but it made me realize a lot of very sad things. I was also very surprised when I heard about some of the things that we read. Some of the things that surprised me were that only 76 of the 100 people had electricity! I thought that everyone would definitely have electricity, because you can't do many really important things without it. Without electricity, we can't refrigerate anything, have light, or even heat! That was very surprising to me! Another thing that surprised me had to do with money. What surprised me about the money was that the richest 10 people have 85% of the villages' money. Then you realize, wait, there can only be 100% of money. That means that there is only 15% of the money, which goes to everyone else! That is crazy! Can you believe how unfair that is to everyone else? I found this very surprising. The final thing that surprised me was how many different cultures, religions, and languages that all the people in this village were from, practiced, or spoke. Out of the 100 people in the village: 33 are Christians, 22 are Muslims, 15 don't follow a religion, 14 are Hindu, 9 are Shamanism, 5 are Buddhist, and 2 are a different religion. Those were just the different religions, there were even more different languages and people from different countries. There were many things that upset me. Some of the things that made me sad, surprised me as well. Like with the money and how unfair the money is split. Something else that made me upset or sad is that not all villages have clean air or water. Because of this, many of them get diseases. I think that everyone should have the right to these important necessities. Something else that made me sad was that not every kid got to go to school. This is sad because you need school to have a good education. Some of the kids that didn't go to school, had to fight for their family! That is so sad, and unfair because they are just kids.
From reading this book, it made me want to go out and do something. The things I wanted to do probably wouldn't make a huge difference, but it make a small difference, which is all that matters. Some of the these things are like donating my old clothes and toys to places that need it or a Goodwill. I could also make a care package for countries in need of it. I just hope that someday these changes will happen, and that the way that the world is now, will somehow change.
