Reflection

Questions

  1. Where did all the water that you poured into your cup go?
  2. How does this model simulate what really happens to groundwater in the world? (How does water get underground? Where is water stored underground?)
  3. Based on this experiment, what can happen to a drop of water after it falls on the ground?
  4. Do you think humans use groundwater? If so, what do we use groundwater for?
  5. How do humans get groundwater to the surface?  Is this easy to do?
  6. Do you think groundwater can move anywhere else? Where? How does it move?
  7. How have your ideas about what happens to a drop of water changed since you started learning more about groundwater?

Answers

1. The water mostly dissolved in the sand, but some of the time it went to the coffee filter, and even the rocks.
2. The water has to go through many surfaces before it can reach even close to bedrock. Even though there weren't as many stages, there were still 3 and I think that it still showed.
3. It will probably soak into water it has hit. If it doesn't, then it will evaporate into the air.
4. I think that we do use water from underground, but it is cleaned first. We probably use it to drink, because of wells, and some people can dig water out of the ground, clean it, then put it in sinks for tap water.
5. They can use a well, or dig it up from the ground. But it is hard. It isn't too hard for a well, but there aren't very many wells, so usually you have to dig it up, and that is very hard.
6. I think that it can move because it can travel with the dirt.
7. I now know that water has many surfaces it has to go through then just the dirt. I also know that it soaks into many of those surfaces.

Lesson 6 - Pioneer Pastimes

Here is my video of my game that I researched about. The pioneers played this game to pass time.

My Reflection

Today we stayed at Alcove Springs. It was so much better then the other places we've stayed. After all of our chores, we played. I wished it would never end. We swam in the fresh water spring, and played all sorts of fun games. My favorite was Jumping Monkey, because of the neat flips and moves that the monkey did. Every time I competed with one of my friends, my monkey went the highest, so I won! Sometimes we would watch people that were brave enough to climb the very tall trees. I was too nervous to try it. Not only did we have a very fun time playing all of the games, we also had a delicious picnic lunch. We had all sorts of food, vegetables, fruits, a rabbit stew, and even an Apple Cobbler for dessert. My favorite was the cobbler, but none of it was bad. I wish we had feasts like this every day. Even though we had plenty of fun, the chores were still needed to be done. I thought that maybe the chores would be a little bit better and more fun, and I was right. With the cheerful mood of everyone else, and the sound of the spring and the birds chirping- it actually felt like we were playing. When me and some of my friends were washing clothes, we started a water fight! It was fun, and we got the job done too. Some other chores were picking berries and vegetables for the trail later on, making a fire and then cleaning it out at night, and plenty of other, what were once considered boring, fun chores. I also realized how much faster and more energized the animals were after being rested. The horses ran super fast when we raced them, and the oxen seemed to pay more attention to our demands when we wanted them to move. I wish we could stay at Alcove Springs forever!

Watery Earth-Lesson 5

Questions

  • Do people really struggle to find clean drinking water?
  • What percentage of the Earth is salt water, and what percentage of the Earth is fresh water? What percentage of the Earth is air, ground, surface, and ice water.

Predictions

  • Many people struggle to find clean water or water at all! In fact, 783 million people have no access to water at all, and 780 million people have no access to clean water. The water that isn't clean is really like no water at all because of the diseases it can bring.
  • I think that 35% of the Earth is salt water, 65% is fresh water, air 35%, ground 15%, surface 35%, and ice 15%.

Notes

  • The reason that so many people don't have access to water, is because so much of the water on Earth is not drinkable, because it is salt water.
  • Earth has 97.24% salt water! That means we can only drink less then 3% of the water on Earth!
  • 0.001 of the fresh water on Earth is in the air! That is not very much!
  • The surface water(lakes, rivers, streams, puddles, etc.) is 0.01 of the water on Earth. Everyone would think that the Great Lakes are huge!
  • All of the water that's in the ground is only 0.61% of the water on Earth! I definitely thought that there was more surface water then ground water! Even though it is way more then surface water, it isn't very much compared to salt water.
  • All of the water that is ice is 2.14%! Out of all of them, I would think that the other ones would be much more then ice!

Reflection

I was super surprised about what the percentages were for the water on Earth. My guesses were way off because I though that there would be more fresh water then salt water. It is kind of hard to believe that there is so much water in the world, yet more then 3/4 of it isn't drinkable. It is also sad, because of how many people need water. I thought that since the world is a lot of water, it was a little bit exaggerated on how many people don't have water. Now, I realize how true it is, and I feel awful about it.

Oregon Trail-Lesson 5- Crossing the Kansas River

Notes

  • On member of the Louis and Clark expedition decided to go out on his own and came to Yellowstone National Park.
  • Trappers wanted to come in this area to catch beaver fur. They caught beavers, other than different animals,  because of the fashion style. If we catch beaver, we could lots of money because of the fashion style.
  • At Yellowstone, you could get up to 6 feet of snow and have the temperatures drop to 30 degrees below zero!!! Yet in the Summer, it can get up to 90 degrees. Big temperature change. We need to be prepared for the cold and hot.
  • In the winter, when they don't have work, will try to get out of the park.
  • Yellowstone is pretty far away from stores. The closest Wal-Mart, Target, or other types of stores are about an hour away. We would have to travel far to get anything.
  • Obsidian is a rock that Yellowstone has a lot of. The Native American tribes used this to make arrow-heads. We could do that too, and without having to spend a lot of money!
  • Petrified wood is something they have in Yellowstone park, because of the volcano eruptions. The lava ended up covering the trees, and turning them into ashes. But, stone replaced the wood. That's why it is called petrified wood. (Petrified means that a stony substance to replace something else)
  • Yellowstone Park has a super famous geyser named Old Faithful. We might need to be careful about those!
  • Yellowstone Park is considered a super volcano, definitely need to be careful about eruptions. But, there is magma below the ground. A Hot-spring warms up becomes of the magma and the concrete it's it. It makes it beautiful colors.
  • The Old Faithful Geyser's opening is only about the size of your fist!
  • Mud-pots are pretty much what happens when water makes mud warm.

Reflection

I had so much fun skyping with the Yellowstone National Park rangers. They taught me so many things about the Oregon Trail and other nature related things. I also learned about some different things we should look out for on the Oregon Trail. I am very thankful for the help that we got and I definitely think that we will use it well. Yellowstone park looked very beautiful when I looked at the pictures, and I hope that I get to go there someday.

Questions

  • What bodies of surface water did you find while examining the three maps?
  • Were there any types of surface water on the Arlington Heights map that you weren’t able to find on the Illinois map? If so, why?
  • Were there any types of surface water on the Illinois map that you couldn’t find on the United States map? If so, why?
  • What are some names of the bodies of water in Illinois and Arlington Heights? What bodies of water did you identify?

Answers

  • I found many bodies of water that I have never heard of before. Some of these include: Santa Barbra Channel, Gulf of California, Long Island Sound, Apalachee Bay, and many more.
  • There weren't very many bodies of water like that, but some of them included: Clear Creek Bay, Lake Louise, Hannon Bay, Judson Bay, Lake Arlington, and Valley Stream. I think this was because the ones on Arlington Heights would be too small to see on the other maps.
  • There were some bodies of water like that, but not many. Some of them were: Calumet Lake, Lake Holiday, Grass Lake, Crab Orchard Lake, Lake Muddy, Lake Springfield, and Lake Clinton. For the same reason as above, I think that I couldn't see these on the USA map because they were so small.
  • I found many bodies of water in Arlington Heights and Illinois. 2 of the more popular ones were Lake Michigan and the Mississippi River. Some others were: Clear Creek Bay, Judson Bay, Hannon Bay, Lake Holiday, Springfiled Lake, and Lake Muddy. There are definitely more, and a lot of them are up above!

Today we are planning on what we should bring on our trip to the Oregon Trail. We also decided that we would be bringing Prairie Schooner Wagons. I learned about many tools that I have never heard of before like kingbolts, whetstones, and many other strange-named items. I also learned very much about the different wagon choices we had to bring. I wanted to bring the Prairie Schooner the whole time I was researching the different wagons, so I learned the most about that. I learned that it is a wagon from the 19th century, that it was the preferred wagon for the trips to the Oregon Trail, and that it was lighter then other wagons and, sadly, smaller. Although I am excited for the Oregon Trail, I definitely have some worries. Some worries I have are that the wagon will be too small and that we wont' be able to fit all of the necessary items that we need in the wagons. That makes me wonder if we might have to get rid of the personal items we brought and other important things that might make it harder to get to Oregon. I'm also worried about the people on the way to the Oregon Trail. I am worried that on the wagons, people will be complaining and getting upset. That might make it harder for everyone else to get along, which might also make it harder to get to Oregon. I plan to purchase many of the items on the list that we made and other things as well. Some other things I might bring are my own food, because I want to make sure that we will have enough food to last the whole trip. I might bring vegetables that won't rot, and packaged food like rice. Even though I have brought it, I will share with everyone else. Most of the food we brought was vegetables and meats, although we will purchase fruits, coffee, and beans. Some other things we plan on purchasing or bringing are weapons to catch food, cooking utensils like pots and pans, one personal item(I am bringing my Kindle Fire), and some extra materials that might help like tools, cloth, spyglasses, bandages, needles, scissors, and many other things.
