Born: April 22, 1832
Born in: Adams, New York
Died: April 27, 1902 (70 years-old)
Died in: Lake Forest, Illinois

J. Sterling Morton is the founder of Arbor day. Some people don't know that Robert Furnas was the co-founder of Arbor Day He was born April 22, 1832 and was raised in Detroit and graduated from the University of Michigan. And after he graduated he moved to Nebraska with his wife, Caroline Joy French. After arriving in Nebraska, he became the editor of the local newspaper. He served shortly in the Nebraska Territorial House of Representatives (1855–1856). He also served as Acting Governor of Nebraska on December 5, 1858, to May 2, 1859. And J. Sterling Morton died April 27, 1902 at the age of 70 in the state of Illinois.

His son, Joy Morton was the founder the Morton salt company and of the Morton Arboretum.

J. Sterling Morton built a 52-room mansion that is a look-alike of the White House. It is now called the Arbor Lodge Historical Park.

There wasn't many trees in Nebraska at the time and he thought it would be a good idea for groups to plant trees in the city.

Earth Day

4/24/2013

On earth day our class brought i-pads outside and we took two pictures per person of something that is a reason to keep our earth clean and healthy. We also got partnered up because we only have 12 i-pads in our class but we have 25 students in our class.

We took different pictures of different things like buds that are growing off of the trees, bushes, or flowers. We also took pictures of trees and grass.

Raindrops on Different Surfaces

Surface

        Trees

            Bricks

          Stone

        Wood

        Windows

        Grass

         Rubber

        Rope

        Metal

Prediction

I think that when the water hits the trees it will sit on the surface and then roll down the tree and eventually either absorb into the tree or fall down the tree and onto the ground.

I predict that when the water hits the bricks it will Absorb the water into the brick or the water will just fall straight down on to the ground.

I think that the stone will absorb the water.

I think that the wood will change a darker color and eventually absorb the water and it will change back to its original color.

I predict that the water will fall right down to the ground.

I think that when the water hits the grass it will fall into the ground because of gravity.

I think that when the water hits the rubber the water will just sit on the rubber and won't go anywhere until gravity pulls it down.

I think that the rope fibers will immediately absorb the water.

I think that the water will just drop one by one on to the ground.

Actual

Some of the water just sat on the leaves of the tree and some immediately fell straight to the ground.

When I dribbled the water onto the brick it also hit the cement and the water that hit the cement absorbed the water in. But the brick just let the water sit on the brick itself and eventually absorbed.

Depending on how much water that I put on the stone, it took longer to evaporate.

When I put the water on the wood the color did change into a darker color and the wood kind of absorbed the water.

Right when I put the drops of water onto the window pane the water fell down but dome just stayed on the glass and spread out into little  circles.

When I put the Water on the grass the water got pulled straight down by gravity. But it didn't do all of the way down.

Like I predicted the water just sat right on top of the rubber surface and fell straight down until gravity pulled it down.

When the water hit the rope it immediately soaked up the water.

When I put the drops of water on the metal surface the water fell straight down and some of it stayed on the surface until it fell by gravity.

Reflection

I wasn't that surprised at the results because I've seen rain drops hit trees before so that helped support my prediction.

I was kind of surprised that the water just sat on the brick and didn't fall straight down onto the ground.

I was not really surprised at the results that happened after I put the water on the stone.

I wasn't surprised at all will the results that happened.

I was kind of shocked at the results that had happened after I had put the water on the window pane.

I was kind of surprised because I thought that the water would just soak into the dirt but it stayed in the middle.

My prediction was the same as the actual thing. So I wasn't that surprised.

My prediction was very  lose to what had happened.

My prediction was kind of close to the actual thing.

Organism Water Use

There are many animals that need water but river otters are just one of the many mammals, birds, and animals that need water to survive because without water the river otter will not be able to eat and be hydrated because the otters eat fish and fish live in water and there is nutrients in the fish including the nutrients in water.
River otters not only drink water but spend most of their everyday life and time in the water. Many of their food sources come from the water but mostly the river otters eat fish. They eat all different kinds of fish.

River otters are brown and black. The adults are three to four feet long, including their 12 to 18 inch tail. The tail is flat and well muscled. They generally weigh 15 to 25 pounds. The  males are usually larger than the females. The river otter's body is elongated. It has small ears. Its ears and nose close when it goes under the water. Its eyes are located near the top of its head, so it can see above the surface while it is swimming nearly submerged. The river otter's legs are short, with five webbed toes on each
foot. It has tightly packed underfur, and its long guard hairs are water-repellent. It has teeth like a carnivore.  The otter's sense of smell is very good, but its senses of sight and hearing are not as well developed.

We need water to survive as humans because 75% of our body weight is made out of water. We need water for our body because, if we get dehydrated we get headaches or eye cramps so we need water so we stay healthy.

Animals need water to survive too because they drink water and to stay hydrated.

Plants need water because their are nutrients in water that plants need just like humans or animals.

Fish need water because they can't survive without it because they have to swim in it and they have to breath in it.

Birds need water too because

What Were the British Colonies in America Like in the 1770's?

Most of the Americans in the 1770's were farmers, but not all of the farmers were alike. And one of the reasons why most of the Americans were farmers is because the soil in the Middle Colonies that was on the ground was richer. But the soil in the New England colonies had rocky soil and a cold climate to farm.
People in the Middle Colonies raised animals like,
Some of the farmers had indentured servants. Indentured servants were people who exchanged work for a number of years to pay for their trip from Europe to the colonies.

Limits On Power

For our We The People unit in social studies we had been put into groups of four or five. And the groups were either captains, crew, author and friends, or ship owners. There was also a navel review board that asked all of the groups questions to see what they believe in and stand by their beliefs. The groups had to write their opinion about limits on power for the captains and I was is the captain crew so I had to defend why captains should had limits but not do whatever they wanted either. It was a lot of work to write defenses and reasons why we shouldn't have many limits on the ship. Eventually it was our turn and our group was the first group up so we all felt like all of the pressure was on us. We as captains also had a disadvantage because we were the first ones up so we couldn't hear what anyone from the other groups were saying so we couldn't defend what they were saying about why captains should have limits on their rights as captains.
Some of the reasons why us as captains shouldn't have many limits is that the crew mates should be punished so we can punish them if needed. We had to defend some of the things that the crew mates would have said if they asked us. One of those probably would have been whipping. And whipping is a big thing for the crew mates. They think that we will hurt them and even kill them but I remember reading that one of the limits were that the captain may not kill anyone on the ship. The navel ship board asked us what are some of the reasons that the captain should be able to whip someone. We

A geologists is a scientists who studies the solid and liquid matter that constitutes the earth as well as the processes and history that has shaped it. Geologists need water for their everyday jobs because, they study the earth's changing surface. And to do that geologists observe water and how it carries small bits of rock that wears off larger rocks over time. Geologists sometimes use an air boat to take river measurements. They don't just travel in boats to find results about our earth's past they go to the mountains and different canyons to find facts and rocks and minerals. Water is important to this job because the snow on the top of the mountains melts into a stream so the rocks travel down the hills and mountains. So water pressures the information that the geologists need to know.
