History alive is a more old fashion learning style but is a great way to incorporate simulations for 21 century learning.
It is also a very good way to know your history. We did a lot this project about arbor day trees and we learned a lot too. We helped lots of people in a company that wanted to help trees grow and live. We collected data about how wide trees were, we took pictures, and we learned about diameter, circumference, how to measure trees, and ion all this project helped trees grow and live. We also helped collect data about if the trees were dead, and if they needed to plant more trees. I loved this project a lot because we helped people, and it really made me feel good.
I liked this learning experience because I could become a better writer and practice my writing skills. This learning experience taught me a lot just from the book and probably helped my lexile level. This help many skills one of the skills were to manage goals and times because you had to finish your stories in the correct time they were to be turned in and you had to make sure you stayed on task with your stories. Other teachers should do this because you students get to read a really good book and then whatever they wanted to say they would get to reflect on there writing.
I learned how everything had a learning experience, but I just thought Mr. Solarz did it for fun! We made a blog post and took a video explaining why I like the experience, what it taught me, three 21st century skills it improved and how it improved, and why I think other teachers should do this.
Reflection: I liked this learning experience because this was fun and it taught me many thing's that where just plain out interesting. Other thing it taught me was you really have to listen to directions because if you did not follow directions in the right way you would have failed and not have gotten any goop. For example if you put too much Borax it would have been to wet and not have stuck together correctly. But if you put to much glue then it would be small and would be like a rock that sticks to your hands. So it was a great experience and it taught me many 21st century skills like, be a risk taker because then you will be able to try and make your goop better bigger or stickier. Find humor for example my friend Sam's did not work but he did not cry or get mad he started to laugh and show people how small his was. You would have to manage your project because you had to finish the project and make sure that you didn't make a massive mess that would take to long to clean up. Other teachers should do this because it is a great and fun experience that is easy to do. Like if other teachers did this it would teach them all those skills that I just said that where useful. If I where a teacher that didn't do Grisly Goop with there students each year I would definitely start it right away.
Colonizing Mars Colonizing Mars is pretty valuable and we get to learn all about Mars and what the world will be like later on. Before we started we read "If the World Were a Village." So the reason why we started this is because in 2150 there will be too many people in the world. So we were learning If we were able to survive on Mars and what we would do if we got on Mars. We also did Skype with a guy from NASA and he told us all about Colonizing Mars and the right things to do when we get to Mars. We learned a lot about space plus a little bit of survival skills. We mainly did colonizing Mars for the Constitution like we made a Preamble and Bill of Rights and things like that.
Yellowstone and NASA Skype's We did a few Skype's with NASA and the people in yellow stone park like Richard Chapman and we projected them on our white board when they talked about what we should do on our Oregon trail and colonizing Mars.
The Arbor Day Tree Census we did for Arbor Day. We got some facts for a company. We got the circumference and then wrote it in our notes. We also measured the distance to the closest building. That could have had an effect on our notes. We also had to take pictures to have evidence for the tree. After we had measured all the trees on school property we went inside. Inside we used the facts to get the diameter of the tree. Finally, we put this all on a blog entry.
Geodes Lab Geodes lab, was a really fun activity but also you got to learn a little bit about geodes. Our teacher, Mr.Solarz, pulled us out of the classroom, we put on goggles and smacked rocks with a hammer, what's better than that!!! We also got to see other classmates' geodes and had a discussion about their rock.
