After all of our hard work and preparation, it was finally time for the debate!!! I was a little nervous because...
During the debate, I felt... because... Once the debate was over, I felt... because... Our group was excited to learn that our opponent in the first round of the Energy Debates was...
We needed to research about their energy source in order to write arguments against them, so we did several things to get information:
My general advice to next year's class regarding writing arguments is... We were asked by Mr. Solarz to put our strongest arguments first, because we might not get to all of them. That turned out to be a good idea because... Our three strongest arguments against our opponent were:
Next, we worked together to create a list of possible defenses we could use during the debate for each argument against us. We knew we couldn't predict every argument that would be thrown at us, but we tried to think of as many as we could. This was tough because...
I'm so glad that we had prepared some defenses before the debate, because our thoughts were better organized than if we just had to come up with them on the spot. I feel that our three strongest defenses were:
Sometimes just creating a list like this can be helpful, even if it is not used during the debate because the process of making the list can help us better understand our positions. This list helped us during the debate because... There was at least one argument during the debate that we weren't prepared for. We wish we had prepared a defense for... Our group wrote our Persuasive Essay together. We started by creating a Google Doc and sharing it with each other and our teacher. Then, we assigned each other parts of the organizer we created to turn into paragraphs (see previous post). It was nice to be able to share the responsibilities of writing this Persuasive Essay because...
Google Docs made collaborating easy because... I think that our Persuasive Essay turned out amazingly because... We learned about how to write a persuasive essay thanks to the Energy Debates! We learned that we need to have an:
We learned that how to arrange our body paragraphs in the most effective order by putting... We learned that we cannot have more than one topic within a body paragraph because... Once our poster was complete, we videotaped ourselves explaining each part of the poster.
This was helpful to us because... We were able to show our teacher that we understood what we wrote by... Recording videos of ourselves explaining things that we learned is fun because... After we finished our organizer, we transferred all of the information onto a huge poster that we hung in the hallway. Three ways that we tried to make it visually interesting were...
Creating this poster challenged us creatively because... We really enjoyed this lesson because... In order to learn more specifics about our energy source, we had to complete an organizer that asked us specific questions. Three of the questions that we answered were:
I think that Mr. Solarz had us do this because... This organizer helped us during the debate because... Mr. Solarz gave us a packet of information to help us get started learning about our energy source.
Three important concepts that we learned about and highlighted in this packet were:
I liked starting our research with this packet because... After the packet, we had to research about our topic by doing Google searches. Google searches are easy because... But Google searches can also be hard because... |
