Tell me how completing the KWHLAQ chart gets you to reflect and process what you learned during Passion Time?
Why do I have you do a separate reflection at the end of each round?

Completing the KWHLAQ gets me ready to reflect by getting my mind thinking at the same, kinda deep level that the reflection needs. I think you have a separate reflection because it is like a summary to a book, it gives people the main idea about the project, and what you thought about it.

I noticed you said, "the KWHLAQ gets me ready to reflect." Do you think you do any reflecting in the KWHLAQ? If so, where?

How is the kind of reflecting you do in the KWHLAQ different from the formal reflection at the end?

Completing the KWHLAQ gets us to reflect by getting us to think about everything we did and what we learned from it, but in a more enjoyable way then others. We have to write a separate reflection because the KWHLAQ might not include our feelings on the project, and in the reflection is where we can write about how we felt we did with this round.

I really like your point about adding your feelings to your formal reflection. Can you support that answer with evidence by copying and pasting one of your reflections that includes your feelings as a reply to this comment?

It helps you reflect because you can look back at what you knew before you did your project and then see what you have learned over the course of the experiment. You have a separate reflection so that you can see and kind of compare all the reflections you have done over the year. It helps you to see how much better you have gotten with your reflection since you were just starting passion time.

I think I understand Sean. You are saying that you can look at your KWH (What you know, want to know, and how you plan on learning it) and compare it to your LAQ (What you learned, what action you plan to take, and your new questions about the topic) to see what you learned over the 6 weeks. Right?

I love the idea of looking at our reflections from each project and seeing how much we've improved in reflecting and learning over the course of the year! How might we measure improvement? How would we know if we've improved or not?

I think that KWHLAQ a very important part of passion time and really makes you think what you just did the past 4 weeks and why it is important. The reflection can be a pain in the butt but it is very important because it shows you and the teacher how you have spent your time and what you got off of it.

I appreciate that you can understand the importance of writing a reflection from the perspective of a teacher! It really does show me how you've spent your time and what you got out of it! Can you think of how each reflection might also benefit you for future rounds?

The KWHLAQ gets us to reflect by getting us to look back at our work, and to see what we learned from it. I think it does help, because we can also plan what we are going to do, but also we can reflect on our work. I think we have a separate reflection for each round because we do have a different question each time, and so we can reflect on something new each round.

I have a question for you Annie. I'm trying to find out if your reflections are all the same or if they change based on the project or based on something else... How have your reflections been different from each other from round to round? Can you please contrast them for me by copying and pasting two distinctly different ones as a reply to this comment? The KWHLAQ gets me to reflect and process what I learned because it is all written down so we can remember what we learned about and that makes it easier for me. We have to do a reflection at the end of each round because we have to explain what we learned in more details.

It makes you think hard about what you knew before, and how much you learned during the process of your project. You can show this to your teacher and say "Mrs. so and so look how much I learned during this project maybe we can try passion time next monday" that will make a difference for your teacher.

Completing KWHLAQ gets us to reflect on a lot of stuff like what we already know, what we want to know, how we will get the information, What we learned, What action will we take, questions we have now. Because if we did it together one person could have loved that round and the other could have hated it and you should do your own reflection and not copy someone elses.

That's true Sam - everyone gets something different out of every experience! I definitely enjoy reading each of your reflections & it wouldn't be the same for me if partners only wrote one together!

Why do you think I have you tell me what you learned about in the KWHLAQ and then still write a reflection at the end? I bet there is some overlap with the "What I Learned" section and the reflection! Or is there?

It helps us like a guideline so we can get things done. We do so we reflect on what we did and how it effected us.

Hi Ed - I have a reflection activity for you to try. Compare & contrast your answer above to the other students' answers in this blog. How is your answer similar to the other children's answers? How is yours different from the others? Which answers are probably most valuable to teachers wanting this information? What specifically made them more valuable than other answers? W,what do I want to know: this helps me focus on what I am going to research about
H,how will I do it: this reminds me to make a list of steps so I know what to do
L,what have I learned: this is a reminder to me to make a reflection
A,what action will I take: I forgot
Q,what questions do i have, normally I have about 5 questions

Thanks for your breakdown of the KWHLAQ Chart. I found most of your points insightful. Please go back to the top of this page and re-read the questions that I posed to you. Did you answer the questions that I asked, or might you have misunderstood the questions a bit? See if you can write a new comment that answers the questions more specifically and I will delete your first answer and this reply of mine.

Also, the "A" in KWHLAQ stands for "What Action will I take?" and that means (to us): How do I plan on getting what I learned out to the world? Sometimes, we make a website. Sometimes, we record ourselves. Sometimes, we create a banner ad. Limitless choices!
