Creating Revolutionary Time Period Videos on the Green Screen Using iMovie

1/22/2013

In an effort to learn about what life was like during 1770's Boston, we have transported back in time and are participating in a simulation that will help everyone learn about the Revolutionary War in a fun way!

The video on the left is a final product of one of our activities.
I wanted my students to learn about the causes of the Revolutionary War with some depth of knowledge, so they spent some time researching and studying a specific cause that was assigned to them.  They put their information onto a timeline that is embedded on the right.

Afterwards, I paired them up with a partner and had them write a script on a shared Google Doc that their characters could perform while "walking down the street" in Boston.  They needed to discuss each of their events and show some understanding of the impact of their events.
Then, they needed to research what houses and businesses looked like during this time period by researching online.  We took some time to draw those buildings on a piece of butcher paper.  After taping them together, I videotaped it using a tripod on a cart so that it could be used as a background for the skits my students made.

Finally, students performed their skits in front of the green screen and those videos were combined with the background video to create the final products that can be seen here.

What program did you use for the timeline and to fuse the green screen with the background?

Thanks for sharing all the awesomeness that is happening in your classroom!

I used iMovie for this project - very simple. Be sure "Show Advanced Tools" is checked in Preferences. Just drag your background video first - then drag your green screen video over it. Select "Green Screen" when prompted.

It is definitely easier to use than Adobe After Effects which I have also used in the past.
