Watery Earth:: Lesson 6

5/7/2013

Glacier

When mountain glaciers melt the run off water can flow into streams, lake, and oceans (And other bodies of water)

The water in a glacier is freshwater.

We would have to wait until the glaciers melt to collect the freshwater.

Polar Ice Caps

Ice caps are formed by glacial movements over many years.

The ice caps are also fresh water unless they melt into saltwater.

We could melt them before they go into the saltwater.

Floating Sea Ice

Floating sea ice is formed when the ocean water gets frozen. It does not come from icebergs or from land.

Sea ice is frozen seawater.

Sea ice is saltwater because it froze in the salt oceans.

Icebergs

Icebergs come from any glacier that reaches the sea. Then, the iceberg melts into the sea water.

Icebergs are fresh water, until they melt into the oceans and become part of the saltwater.

We couldn't use the water because it would already be salt water because it melts into the oceans.

⬇Check Out My Reflection On My Podcast!!⬇                         ⬆Check My Podcast Out First Though!⬆

Today we recorded our W.E.X. story that we wrote, and put on our blog (check out podcast above). I thought the hardest part was reading without studdering (or biting your tongue >.<). I realized that if you want to sound like a pro at your story, you have to use emotions, like instead of saying "wow.." you want to say "WOW!" (If it is supposed to be enthusiastic).

J. Sterling Morton :: Arbor Day

4/25/2013

Did you know that the first Arbor day took place on April 10, 1872 in Nebraska (because I didn't)? Arbor day was the idea of J. Sterling Morton. Throughout his career, Morton improved his agricultural techniques in his state and throughout the U.S.A. when he served as President  Cleveland's Secretary of Agriculture. But the most important thing he left to U.S.A. , was Arbor Day.
Now some of you might be wondering what arbor means. Well, arbor means a tree, or a beam. That is exactly why thank trees, and plant trees on Arbor day

A few days ago, Mr. Solarz took us outside for Earth Day, to walk and take pictures of our beautiful  Mother Nature. I thought that seeing all the things Westgate, I realized that I was missing out. The pictures that me and Erin took, were cool, because we each took what we thought was cool. Erin took a picture ofa pine tree from the bottomm, and I thought it was cool to see that Erin took a picture from an unusual point of view!
I was surprised when I  saw  all different kinds of buds everywhere!! Some were fuzzy, while some were smooth, some big, some small (some were really long!), and some, wer red, some were white. I was happy to be at school to see the beauty of nature!!!

Watery Earth:: Raindrops on Different Surfaces

Leaf

Rock/Mountain

Prediction

After the drop of water hits the water, It will only make a ripple effect.

I thought that the water would slide straight down leaving only a mark of...wetness.

I think that the water will slide down my skin if I hold it vertically, but if it is horizontal, I think it will stay.

I think that droplet will slid down like it did on the wood.

I think it will hit the surface, splat, than the rock will absorb it a little bit until there was no mark.

Actual

After the drop hit the water, it jumped up out of the cup, than went back in, made a ripple effect.

After the water hit the wood, most of got pulled down by gravity, but only some water water, just a little bit stayed.

This is a little interesting. First I put a water droplet on my arm horizontally, and it stayed. Next, I did vertically, and it just slid down, but wait...the one that put on first didn't slide down!!!

What happened on the leaf is what happened on my arm. It slid down when it was vertical it slid down, and when it was horizontal, it stayed.

My prediction was half right and half wrong because the water didn't splat as much as I thought it would.

Reflection

I was shocked to see the water drop come up, because I didn't think that water could bounce on water.

I was a little surprised to see that not all of the water slid down the wood, I thought that all WOULD slide down.

I was completely shocked to see the first water droplet still clanged on o my arm.

I was surprised to see that the results were similar to the results on my arm
