How the States Got Their Shapes : city vs Country

Every state has a split between city and country.  This split contributes to their shapes.  Why do people live in the city vs the country?
    In 1790, 95% of people lived in the country.  Now only 19% of Americans live there.  In the 1920's, the population shifted from the country to the city because people moved to get jobs.  Which do people prefer?
