- A ton of people of people came there for beaver skins. They could make beaver skin hats and sell them to make money like we need to do to buy items.
- Beavers became scarce so then some of the trappers became tour people that took people along the trail. So that means that we might not get as many furs to sell.
- 26! different Indian tribes around Yellowstone! That's a lot!
- It was really cold and higher up and really windy. They get a ton of snow in the winter, around 6 feet or more is average. So going through Yellowstone is going to be tough.
- The Indians were in Yellowstone only in the summer because of the harsh winters. So we have to get to Oregon fast!
- It was really hard to move around there with the snow and cold temperatures. We would die in the winter then!
- Wheeled vehicles aren't allowed during the winter, so the rangers snowmobile. It is also very isolated.
- A famous trapper is Osborn Russel and having interactions with Indians. He visited the sheep-hunting ones and traded for obsidian and stuff. They used obsidian to make arrowheads and other blades for it's sharpness and strength.
- People that went out there to Yellowstone told crazy stories about what they saw that were only partially true.
- After a volcanic eruption, ash went on the tree and it created petrified wood and trees.
- Magma can heat things up with magma and a hot spring to warm up on the trail.
- Some of the geysers could give you a chemical burn. Watch out!
- The water in a hot spring is so hot, that it is as hot as boiling water. Don't step in it!
- Geysers have a lot of pressure so then they can shoot up higher caused by the small opening and space underneath. The opening is as big as your fist!
- When the gas from a volcano mixes with water, it makes the water acidic.
- Old Faithful got it's name from the Hayden expedition and they relied on it for heat. It was old, and faithful.
Reflection: It was cool to learn about the geysers and mountains and all those cool things about the things in Yellowstone. I couldn't believe several of the things that she said, like the Geysers were almost at boiling point! That's extremely hot! I would die if I went in water that hot. Just burned so badly from the heat. There were other things too, like the petrified trees, and the volcanoes that would make the water it touched all acidic and really dangerous. We also learned about the pressure and she made some good inferences to what we do. All in all, it was really fun.
