Leaves change color in the fall because, most trees, the weather in the winter is too harsh of conditions for them to survive in. So, they have to shed their leaves in order to survive. Some trees, like evergreens, they protect their leaves with a waxy coating that protects their leaves throughout the winter. But how they change is, there is a chemical called chlorophyll. The chlorophyll makes the leaves change colors ( it depends what type of tree it is for the color ) before it falls off and dies. That's how I think leaves change colors.
