Dear Diary, Some Day in 1768
Today, I was transported to 1768 Boston! I wasn't really prepared, so I had to find a job! Luckily, our computers still work, so I was able to do a little research. The jobs are way different from what I'm used to in 2013!
Finally, I decided to become a knacker. A knacker is a person who takes horses who can no longer work, and turns their bodies into things that other people can use.
I picked this job because I like working with animals, and I couldn't find another job that I could picture myself liking. I'm excited to work again tomorrow.
It was hard finding a master knacker in town that didn't already have an apprentice. Believe it or not, I went to 7 different knackers before I could find one that would take me. It's not anything I have against 1768 Boston, but I guess I'm not the only one in town who wants to be a knacker.
I sleep in a small barn with most of the living horses we have. In fact, I'm writing in the barn right now. Even though the horses are all alive in here, it smells of death and horse manure. I have a sneaking suspicion that all horses used to be in here: dead or alive. It costs me 1/4 of my pay to rent this barn. That's 2 cents a week! I know, it doesn't seem like much, but I could have seen, like, 2 plays with that! This is every week! Expensive barn!
Now, Diary, you might ask, Why do you have living horses when you are cutting them up for their bodies? Well, I wondered that too. Now I know the answer. We get dead horses to work with as well as the living horses who are useless to their previous owners.
Getting used to living in the past is hard. If I need a ride, and I yell, "TAXI!" people look at me like I'm crazy. (You only make that mistake once.) I still don't know exactly what to yell, but I'll find out.
Most other kids my age don't have jobs yet, but I guess people from the future are different. I'm not complaining, but I feel like I don't have a complete education, but (surprisingly) I don't care. In 2013, this would never happen. I'm in 1768 now. I must put the future behind me. That sounded really weird. The future is in front of me, but I just said I need to put it behind me! Anyway, I can't wait to learn more about the past..I mean present.. Who cares what I meant?
Your Friend,
Julia
