This is how leaves change colors:
The chlorophyll in a chemical called pigment that makes some sort of color in a plant. Also there is photosynthesis that makes plants green. As it gets colder the trees stop the food-making,which makes the leaves stay green or go green.
Yellow and Orange
There is also a yellow and orange pigment that makes their colors orange and yellow. There is also a carotene in there that helps the pigment turn to orange and yellow. There is also a xanthophyll in there too. This one helps more with yellow. As it gets colder the chlorophyll breaks down. Then it turns from green to yellow or orange.
There is also a pigment in here that helps it turn red. There is anthocyanins in there that turn it from green to violet and then to red.The anthocyanins is not in the leaves all year round like the other pigments. They only get in when the chlorophyll breaks down. The anthocyanins protect leaves from the sun,but when it gets cold it breaks down and turns red.
Brown The lack of colors is waste products trapped in the leaves.
